Caravan and Camping on Tour in Esperance

Before visiting Esperance in Western Australia, all I knew about it was the name of the town and roughly where it was, now I only have to hear the name and I am transported back to this dream destination with the most vivid ultramarine water I’ve ever seen and sand so icing sugar white, it take your breath away.

In the current edition of Caravan & Motorhome on Tour magazine, issue 267, you can read my story on what makes this area so special to visit. If I had to rate the 5 top things to do in Esperance they would be:

1. Stay at Cape Le Grand National Park and in particular Lucky Bay. What seems too good to be true is an everyday occurrence at this magical place. Kangaroos on the beach, kangaroos in your campsite, kangaroos in your van if you’re not careful! They are friendly and very obliging for photographs, not receiving anything more than a pat in return.

2. Drive the Great Ocean Scenic Drive and be dazzled by beach after beach, each one a spectacular sight with different things to offer. You can find beaches suitable for surfing and windsurfing, scenic walkways, bays that make your jaw drop and safe beaches for swimming with surf life savers on watch.

3. Lucky Bay Brewing is on part of the scenic drive loop so it’s a definite drop in and visit spot. Find yourself a spot to sit in the very relaxed and casual outdoor area and try a tasting paddle of their brews. Great, friendly people to chat with about the beers and the processes and top beer to boot.

4. Stay for a market and wander along the foreshore with historic information to read along the way if you can drag your eyes away from the water. The whale tail sculpture is unmissable and is stunning both day and night with the glass inserts showing their own magic at night when they are backlit.

5. The Esperance museum is a must see too, even if you aren’t a museum fan, this one is different. Full of memorabilia from everyday life, you will no doubt remember some of the old household items that are on display. It’s a bit daunting when you see things in a museum that you remember at home as a child. Dial telephones, manual typewriters and boxes of items that were in the pantry or medicine cabinet of our childhoods are now museum items!

Esperance was the first of the planned destinations on our caravan holiday in Western Australia and we had to drag ourselves away from this scenic and friendly town. It’s now high on the list of places to return to and stay even longer next time.

Don’t dream about it, do it!
