The Lets Go Caravan and Camping Show has finished it’s run in Adelaide and now it ups and moves off to other states around Australia. I’d recommend going for a visit especially if you haven’t been to one for a while, the number of new vans and camper trailers is quite mind blowing. To be able to take a look inside so many new vans and campers on offer these days will leave you wowed. Whether you are in the market to buy or not it gives you a huge amount of information on prices, value for money and finishes you might like when the day comes that you are ready to invest. It really does all come down to where you are planning to go, what sort of road conditions you want your van to handle and personal preferences for interior layouts.
Like me, you may just be happy to walk away with some new accessories for the van and a heap of information for planning your next few trips away. There are plenty of publications for you to buy or pick up for free that will help with ideas on where to go next.
It is no wonder that the caravan and camping shows are so popular with latest statistics released by Tourism Research Australia showing that caravan and camping trips are growing in popularity every year. I did notice at the show there were more family vans on display than I’d seen for a while which is probably as a result of the most prominent age demographic for caravan and camping trips being the 30 – 54 year age bracket. The next popularity bracket for these holidays was amongst the 55+ age group. The 20-29 age group also saw a huge 11% growth from the previous year’s data.
The other statistics that came from the research that didn’t surprise me at all were the most popular experiences that many caravanners and campers took part in, the most popular being:
- going to beaches
- bushwalking
- eating out at restaurants and cafes.
And with over 620,000 caravan and campervans registered in Australia that is a lot of money travelling around regions at all times of the year and boosting the local economies as they travel. It is estimated that at any one time there are 135,000 caravans on the road in Australia.
The best part is there’s plenty of room for all of us!
Happy travels and see you on the road somewhere,
Glenys
135,000 eh, and I’ll bet they’re all trying to get into the only caravan park at Port Lincoln.

Oh no we haven’t come across that problem yet, but we did get the last site at Coral Bay when we travelled there. It was still worth it. You’re just reinforcing why we travel off peak whenever possible. 😎

Good article Glenys and we do hope to make a short trip if we can before it gets too late.

Thank you, we are lucky living in such a huge country, if places are too crowded for our liking we just keep moving on.

Exactly!! Much of the area in Australia is not livable though brilliant to camp around and as you say you can move on if it is too crowded 🙂

We have a couple of weekends planned in SA then back to Melbourne in April, the kids are moving suburbs, so we better come and find them. Mid year looking at north coast of NSW. We will give you some firm dates when we know them!

Miriam, in Australia you are more fortunate when it comes to space. In NZ, there are too many motorhomers and our last month owning one was not enjoyable, and we were glad to sell her, though there were tears in our eyes as we remembered all the good times we had over the 10 years we motorhomed in NZ. Have completed 2 in Australia and loved it. Perhaps we will do a third!

I often hear really good things about doing motor home trips in New Zealand too Suzanne.

It is brilliant touring around NZ in a motorhome. I was relating to more being fulltime and having to put up with more inconsiderate people and especially those that have no facilities chose to use our beaches etc as their public toilets. It is a big issue over here and has been for quite a while. Over the years we have lost many freedom camping sites due to this. We never went into camping grounds as we were fully operational without needing any campground facilities. Just too crowded and the thought of being in a crowded campsite was not appealing to us.

Yes we are lucky in Australia Suzanne, without a doubt, in terms of space. It’s a big country and there’s plenty of room for all sorts of vans and motorhomers. Hope you get over here again!

Yes, I hope we do. Need to sort out a few things do some planning and see what happens. Winter in the Northern Territory sounds like a good start for a few weeks 🙂

That’s definitely a time to look out for crowds though. We like trying to go just before peak times. Lots of southerners in Australia look to head north in June/July/August.

Yes, we met some fulltime motorhomers in Western Australia who said there was a migration north in winter. Will definitely book ahead though with how things are we can’t plan too far ahead. Thanks for the information Glenys.

We love being on the road with our van and look forward to the day when we can just pack up and head off on a whim. I like the simple life we lead on the road.
