It’s showtime! From August until the end of March country shows are in full swing around South Australia and what fun they are. If you find yourself in an area where one is being held, treat yourself and go along.  You could even plan a mini break around hitting the road to see one.

Don’t let the idea fool you into thinking you will have to travel far either, there are some as close as a 45 minute drive from the city to regions on the far west coast, Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island and Riverland, just about every corner of the state is covered really.

There’s a lot to love about a country show including some thrill seeking rides and a few tamer ones for the little folk. You can buy a showbag from a smaller selection than the bigger city shows but what is really fun is the community involvement in a country show. Everyone is encouraged to participate and especially young people whether its cooking, growing vegetables or flowers, art, photography, woodwork and more.

There is a real drive to promote awareness of rural and agricultural enterprise, local community activities and showcase the lifestyle of regions. They really do show off the best that regions have to offer in the way of food production, natural resource management and they bring communities together to feel proud about where they live and encourage people to give back.

These photos are from the recent Port Elliot Show where families could enjoy everything from pony and camel rides to stomach churning whizzy rides and even a ride on the back of a monster truck. Lots of skills were on show from woodworking to wool spinning and if you were feeling game you could give belly dancing a go.

All the good and bad food you’d expect from a show can be found as well as some unexpected treats. Country shows are a great way to support local communities and you can even participate in ‘People’s Choice” judging.

You can see a wide range of displays to interest everyone in the family including in this case vintage motorbikes and a ute muster. A good dose of humour is never too far away either, fancy some politically incorrect nougat? Then go visit the CWA (Country Womens Association) stall to buy some containing all the allergens, packaged by child and unpaid labour.
