Point Turton – A Winner for Caravanners

In a recent newspaper and social media poll, the Point Turton Caravan Park on Yorke Peninsula, was named South Australia’s favourite, for the second year in a row.

It’s not hard to see why with location, location, location being the first thing that comes to mind.

It takes just under three hours to drive from Adelaide to Point Turton on the western side of southern York Peninsula and the caravan park is situated overlooking the bay, boat ramp and jetty.

The park has some terrific waterfront sites that enable you to watch sunrises over the bay, dolphin pods as they cruise by and comical pelicans that frequent the area and land on the light poles.

The boat ramp is easy to access between the breakwater walls and there is plenty of parking for cars and boat trailers once you’ve launched. The jetty is small but so close to the park that it’s easy to give fishing there a go at anytime.

If fishing isn’t your go to activity, it still pays to take a walk to the jetty so you can see the resident stingrays that call the bay and its clear and clean water home. They are obviously looking for an easy feed from any fisher’s catches but feeding them is definitely not encouraged.

You can also take a walk along the beachfront or a walking path that takes you past beachfront shacks or jump in the car and drive around to the nearby white sand Flaherty’s Beach and then to Hardwicke Bay for a look at this beachfront shack living community.

If you take a drive on the North Coast Road you can find a couple of terrific bush camping areas which are managed by the Yorke Peninsula Council. These low cost campgrounds are suitable for caravans and have basic (long drop) toilet facilities.

The first of these campgrounds is Len Barker Reserve which has room for around 10 – 20 caravans and overlooks a reefy beach at Point Souttar. Continuing on this road past Point Souttar you’ll come to Burners Beach campground.

There are two areas where you can camp, one being for fully self-contained vans only (no toilet facilities) and the other area which has another basic toilet to use. Burners Beach is a large campground that has around 20 – 40 sites and a short walk over dunes takes you to a beautiful white sand beach.

Camping fees at all of the bush camping grounds are $20 per vehicle per night or $100 for 5-7 days and dogs are permitted.

There’s a small general store in Point Turton where you can buy basic supplies and bakery items and the Tavern on Turton is the place for dining and a drink or two overlooking the picturesque bay.

Enjoy this little slice of heaven on Yorkes.
