Tasting Australia and Adelaide Central Market

You haven’t visited the heart of Adelaide without a wander through the Adelaide Central Market and during Tasting Australia in May 2024, you can see some of South Australia’s top chefs creating their signature dishes using fresh market produce.

These demonstrations are all just part of a day out at this enormous produce market and they are free to watch in the Community Kitchen area near the Gouger Street entrance.

Bookings aren’t required and you can find more details on the Adelaide Central Market website on the events page.

Those of us who live in South Australia love the Central Market at any time, but a word of warning, it’s one of those places that you’re going to want to spend time and money at every stall. The fruit and veggies are glowing in freshness, and the butchers, smallgoods, poultry and seafood sellers have a mind boggling selection of delectable goodies.

My weakness is always the bread shops and cheese vendors, where there is too much variety to choose from so I overindulge. Next time we have to remind ourselves to go early, and have breakfast and a coffee in the market. That may stop us from wanting to buy everything we see as we shop our way through the more than 76 stalls in the precinct.

If you’re planning a day at the Adelaide Central Market why not consider taking a picnic basket too and then when you’ve shopped for the all the charcuterie ingredients you need, take a short drive to one of the many parklands in the city, throw out a blanket and indulge.

My pick would be to head to Rymill Park in the east end where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Rymill Lake and watch the ducks and other birdlife.

Autumn is a perfect time in Adelaide with our mild Mediterranean climate still bringing average daily temperatures of around 20 degrees, our leafy treed city is currently turning on the autumn colours, and the chance of rain is low. If there’s time, visit the Adelaide Botanic Gardens nearby too for the full autumn experience.

To indulge in the delicious food festival which is Tasting Australia, you’ll need to visit South Australia from the 3rd to the 12th of May 2024, when a full program of events will be held in the city and regional areas.

The hub for the Tasting Australia Festival is Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga where you can spend time with family and friends and sample different food and drinks. There are more than a dozen venues. featuring some of South Australia’s best restaurants and cafes where you can savour their specialty dishes for lunch or dinner.

Town Square is open from 11am to 9pm during Tasting Australia and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. For a full list of events visit the Tasting Australia website, and if you can’t make it this year, consider adding it to your calendar.

During any visit to Adelaide though, you can enjoy the freshest of foods from some of the country’s best makers and producers at the Adelaide Central Market which opens from Tuesday to Saturdays, in the prettiest and easiest city to navigate.

Enjoy
