When you think of wine regions in South Australia, Yorke Peninsula isn’t one that would normally spring to mind, but this winery which was Yorke Peninsula’s first, is worth a visit with a wide range of wines to taste and a surprising cellar door.
The winery is just a short distance from Maitland, in a region known for its barley and cereal crops and hence the name for the winery came from the fields of barley that surround it.
The vineyard can be seen next to the cellar door, which is a huge farm shed that doesn’t give much away from the outside about its comfortable, warm and welcoming interior. The grapevines are growing in limestone sub soils and the fruit is influenced by the salt laden sea air that the peninsula gets.

Varieties of grapes grown include Shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and viognier and their wines have won multiple awards at shows including the Australian Small Winemakers Show. When you visit the cellar door you are more than welcome to try any of the more than dozen varieties of wine they produce, crush, ferment and bottle on site, and all at no cost for tasting.

Once you’ve tasted and chosen your favourite wine, you can buy a glass to enjoy with one of their tasty cheese and local produce platters or gourmet pizzas while you relax in the cellar door section or in the rustic function centre under the fairy lights and chandelier. The setting is quite surreal given the isolated area where the winery is located. It’s not hard to see why the venue is also used as a function centre for weddings and events.

This family and pet friendly winery is open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm and is located 13 kilometres south of Maitland. Keep a look out for the sign posts pointing the way down the unsealed roads that turn off the main highway, until the large shed comes into view.

As well as the lovely wines, food and excellent friendly service, the cellar door also offer a range of other locally made beverages to try from Yorke Peninsula businesses, Watsacowie Brewing Co and Sunny Hill Distillery.
Cheers
