Are you Team Cat or Team Dog?

Thereโ€™s a fun exhibition on at the Ian Potter Centre, NGV in Federation Square, Melbourne, and I guarantee itโ€™s one that cat and dog owners will absolutely love.

Whether you belong to team cat or team dog, or in our case both, this is something that will appeal to and amuse all pet lovers amongst the more than 250 artworks.

The exhibition explores the deep connection that humanity has always had with cats and dogs, and features paintings, textiles, ceramics, sculptures and more, and the best part is you can even get your own moggie or pooch in on the fun! But more on that later.

Along with the art there are little snippets of information explaining why pets have become such important subjects and models for artists over the centuries, as well as the artistโ€™s stories behind the artworks.

For instance it was explained that the sleeping cat was often used in various forms of art because they oozed tranquillity and symbolised calm, peace and serenity.

The balloon dog is a familiar shape that features in a sculpture by American designer Jeff Koons, a symbol of the celebration of childhood and colour and simplicity.

Dogs and cats on film and television are also celebrated, including some old film showing the training of working dogs. It doesnโ€™t take long to think of how much we see cats and dogs in current art and television too, hello Bluey.

Cats and dogs and their importance in different cultures around the world and over the centuries are also on display.

And then comes the really fun part, and probably the most crowded room in the gallery. As you make your way around the exhibition, there are notices with QR codes that encourage you to put your cat or dog into the exhibition so of course we did, not knowing that as we entered another room of the gallery a few moments later, there were not only our (family owned) cats, but also dozens of framed family photos of all the other visitors cats and dogs.

This room brought so much joy to everyone, because our animals do just that to our lives every day. Everyone sat or stood just watching for ages as the framed photos scrolled around the four walls. It was a real moment of shared camaraderie and broad smiles for all.

In this room you can also vote for whether youโ€™re a dog or cat person. Luckily there were two of us there, because we had to go a vote for each.

It does cost a small amount to see the exhibition, $16 for adults or $14 for concessions, all other prices are on their website, and itโ€™s on until the 20th of July 2025. Before you visit, don’t forget to have a photo of your cat or dog on your phone, (and who doesnโ€™t!), so that they can star in the exhibition too.

Make sure to visit the gallery shop afterwards for some great dog and cat themed items to buy.

Enjoy

Glenys

  1. This looks like a fun exhibition, Glenys! I have always wondered why some folks have dogs and others have catsโ€ฆand why others have, well, not cats and dogs!ย Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day ๐Ÿ™‚ Aiva xx

    1. We’ve had cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, fish and even a frog over the years mainly for our kids, but we’ve loved them all too. Now just our adult kids have cats to care for. We’ve handed over the responsibility. ๐Ÿ™‚
