Bowman Scenic Drive – Beachport South Australia

If this is one coastal drive you haven’t heard of, put it on your yet to discover list and make a plan to incorporate it into an itinerary for touring the south east of South Australia.

It’s not a long drive, at around 8 kilometres, but it shows some spectacular rugged coastline as the road follows the edge of the southern ocean where it laps onto white sand fringed beaches.

There are plenty of areas to pull off the road, so you can take a good look at the scenery unfolding, and in certain spots there are car parks to stop, get out and wander onto the beaches for a better look.

Drop in and take a walk at Salmon Hole, which as the name suggests is also a popular spot for beach fishing, with salmon, whiting and more for the taking. Another must see is Post Office Rock with its rocky outcrops which opens up to Pleasant Cove and Cowrie Island.

It pays to stop at every parking area provided to get breathtaking views in both directions, of sweeping sandy beaches, blowholes, rocky shelves to explore and aquamarine water.

Make sure you take the drive slowly and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife too. We were lucky enough to see an echidna strolling its way over the road and into scrub.

Part of the drive takes you past the unique Pool of Siloam, which is a lake said to be seven times more salty than the sea, making the water extremely buoyant and also allegedly, giving it therapeutic properties. For those wanting to test the theory out and take a dip, the lake area has its own carpark as well as picnic areas, change rooms and toilets. Apparently you’ll be unsinkable, but just don’t get the water in your eyes.

Beachport is a little over 4 hours’ drive, south of Adelaide and it has a well sited ocean front caravan park, a long jetty for fishing, local shops and dining options all within easy walking distance from the caravan park.

Enjoy
