Preparing for Summer Caravanning

When it gets to the last quarter of the year, it’s a good time to start preparations for the upcoming summer caravanning holidays.

With car and caravan maintenance it pays to prepare with plenty of time in advance so that there is time to book in with professionals to get work done, before the summer rush.

Maintenance

Our maintenance checklist for the caravan has included a wheel alignment (something that should be done every 10,000 km or once a year) and as we’ve done before, we used a service that comes to you, very convenient and efficient.

They do the wheel alignment in the driveway and afterwards give a detailed, comprehensive printed report.

New Tyres

Next up was new tyres for the caravan which we got to match our Landcruiser tow vehicle, because of their reliability. With the different terrain that we drive on in the Landcruiser, the Toyo open country A/T tyres have always been reliable for us, even with deflating and reinflating often for sand driving, as well as driving on rough corrugated dirt, and bitumen roads. We’ve never had a flat tyre or any other issues, so that gave us confidence to also fit them on the caravan.

This time we have gone for a slightly higher profile tyre for the caravan which gives it a lift of around 30mm, which is handy for going off grid too, giving a little more clearance on dirt roads.

The next job will be to refit the tyre pressure monitors on the new caravan tyres to keep an eye on tyre pressures as we drive. The benefit of this is that you are alerted to any under or over pressure issues as they occur, enabling you to take early action if needed.

Driving with the right tyre pressure increases driving safety and handling, extends the life of the tyres, and improves fuel efficiency.

There are more caravan maintenance issues coming up in the next few weeks, and other trip preparation planning underway, so make sure to follow for more maintenance and trip prep advice.

Cheers

Glenys
