A favourite holiday spot on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula is Point Turton, a quiet place to relax, enjoy the fishing in the sheltered bay and soak up the serenity of country coastal calmness.
A big part of its charm is that it’s still an unspoilt gem, with just enough in the way of facilities to make it attractive to visitors wanting to get away from it all, and it’s only a little under 240 kilometres from Adelaide.
Point Turton has a caravan park in prime position overlooking the small jetty and breakwater sheltered boat ramp with a tavern situated a short walk behind the park. The town also has a grocery store, with bakery goods and takeaway food, and fuel pumps.

It really is the natural landscape that draws visitors here though, when at its best, the fishing by boat or on the jetty is worth the trip and sitting back at the end of day just admiring the view from the caravan is peace at its best.
While you’re in the area though, you have to take a few short drives to see some unmissable attractions and natural beauties the area has.
Just to the north side of the caravan park, you’ll find Magazine Bay, a rocky beach surrounded by cliff faces, with the beach being able to be explored on the low tide. The bay is around 100 metres long and there is a set of steps that you can take to get down to it. Its rocky setting also makes it a good spot for squidding.

If you walk your way carefully over rocks and boulders you’ll notice a small cave about halfway up the cliff face. This cave was once a store for explosives, which gave the bay its name. The explosives were used at the old quarry, where the caravan park now sits, and because dynamite wasn’t allowed near the jetty area, it was stored in the cave for safety.
Another scenic drive to take if you have a 4WD, is to Flaherty’s Beach, around 6 kilometres east of Point Turton. Once there you can drive on this picture worthy white sand beach which stretches for around 7 kilometres, ending at the town of Hardwicke Bay.

Flaherty’s Beach is often voted as one of Australia’s best beaches and it’s not hard to see why with its perfect white sand, sheltered position and native vegetation covered sand dunes bordering it. It’s a safe beach and a lovely spot to spend a day. For people driving on the beach, road rules apply and you should also be mindful of beach nesting birds and only drive between the high water mark and the water, as these little birds nest between the high tide mark and the dunes.

Another drive to take is to the nearby town of Warooka about 8 kilometres from Point Turton. Warooka has a supermarket, hotel, other specialty shops and some terrific murals to see. The murals are stunning and also utilize augmented reality technology to create moving stories.

The murals were painted by local artists from Studio Surf, and include the surrounding landscapes, indigenous stories and cultural references.

Warooka also has off grid camping available near the town oval with enough sites for up to 20 vans. The park is basic but does have toilets and a dump point to use, all for $10 per night, payable onsite in an honesty box.

While you’re in the area, make sure to pay a visit to Lower Yorke Seafood for the freshest caught, tastiest seafood going. Their prices are very good and nothing beats locally caught and ready to go seafood. We indulged in a couple of small cooked lobsters and a dozen scallops which we pan fried quickly in a garlic and herb butter for one decadent meal on our caravan holiday.

Check out Point Turton and Warooka next time you’re on Yorke Peninsula.

Cheers
