Goolwa Wharf Market

This is one of my all time favourite markets, with more than 80 stalls and a huge variety amongst them. As the name suggests, it’s situated right next to the Goolwa wharf, in a green park with paths throughout that make it easy to wander through. The market is held on the first and third Sunday of the month from 9am to 3pm, with the next market this Sunday the 16th of February. Goolwa is a popular day trip from Adelaide and the weather is usually a little milder than the city. If the temperature is expected to be hot in Adelaide, then you can cool off by a few degrees in Goolwa.

Now to some of my favourite stalls at the market. I can personally vouch for the hot food on offer, from big meaty pies to gourmet sausage rolls and the ‘Best ever large steamed Dim Sim’. I’ve tried them all, just not on the same day! To wash it down you can sample wines or cider or if it’s a tad too early for that there are a variety of coffees, teas and hot chocolates to choose from.

However, it’s not just about the food. This is one of the best markets for variety with quality artisan make products like jewellery, leather belts, plant pots, sauces and preserves, soaps, candles and pet products. Need a new collar or leash for your cat or dog, or maybe a bandanna? This is the place to source something special for your pet. On the subject of pets the well behaved ones are welcome to wander with you on leash and water bowls can be found as you walk around.

This is a terrific market to get inexpensive advanced plants too and ones we’ve had success with especially the succulents, herbs and vegetable plants. Other than that, you can find stalls selling seedlings, proteas and even waterlilies.

Being in Goolwa, a town set between the river and the sea, you will find a lot of beach themed products. Whales, pelicans, fish, driftwood and shell decorations appear throughout the market on a number of home and holiday house décor stalls. Add to this some great browsing sites including tools, books, DVDs, toys and games for children and fruit and veg and you pretty much have everything covered.

This is a really pleasurable market to visit with friendly stall holders happy to have a chat, and quality products and food. When you’ve seen it all you are just a short stroll away from the wharf with comfortable places to sit and dine or to grab a small bite to eat, including at the Wharf Barrel Shed and Hectors on the Wharf. These places are easy to settle into to watch the river traffic and pelicans glide by.

The upcoming Sunday market dates are: February 16th, March 1st and 15th, April 5th, 10th & 12th (Special Easter Markets) and 19th.

Cheers

Glenys
