There are many reasons to visit Goolwa in South Australia, it’s only a little over an hour from Adelaide, the beach is a popular surfing destination, and it’s the last town on the picturesque Murray River before it winds its way out to sea. Goolwa has a holiday town feel to it whenever you visit and the boutique shopping and markets are always popular on weekends. Another experience not to miss is an afternoon on the wharf down by the river, enjoying the great views and friendly casual atmosphere at the Wharf Barrel Shed, home of 90 Mile Wines.
What was intended as a cellar door for the wines has turned into a wine bar and popular meeting spot for locals and visitors to congregate and enjoy the ambience. Since 2014 the Barrel Shed has been operating here and you can now enjoy the wines, craft beers and ciders or an excellent coffee and when circumstances allow, live music on the weekends. The range of wines they make include a sparkling, three white varieties, a Rose and two reds with grapes grown in the wine regions of McLaren Vale, the Clare Valley and the Adelaide Hills.
Whatever the weather there is somewhere comfortable to sit with chairs and half barrel tables on a lawn area on sunny afternoons or areas outdoors that are shaded by the heritage shed if needed. During colder times there is space inside the venue to sit with a wood fire burning or gas heaters keep patrons warm outside. They make some pretty moorish toasted sandwiches that hit the spot with a drink too – try ‘The Godfather’.
It’s a very popular spot every afternoon from 4-6 when they put on happy hour (it’s two but who’s counting) especially in the summer months, when you can enjoy a cool breeze from the river and watch boats and pelicans cruising by. Dogs are allowed on leash and there are water bowls for them too or you may even have the company of some of the local ducks. The Wharf Barrel Shed is in Goolwa, just head down to the river and you won’t miss it, they are open every day, Sundays to Thursdays 12 to 6pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 9pm. See you there!
Cheers
Glenys

A prime reason to visit the Goolwa region – is that Harry the beer brewer and Glenys the Recreational Review Blogger both live there. 🙂

I’ve never heard about Goolwa before, but it sounds like a great place to visit, especially the surfing part. Would be so nice to go surfing without the need to wear a wetsuit. If only Australia was a little bit closer to Ireland! Thanks for sharing and have a good day. Aiva

Hi Aiva yes Goolwa is a small town of less than 2500 people but the population grows on weekends and in holiday time. The surf coast in this area is really well known and very popular with surfers of all abilities. Have a great day 😊
