Adelaide Central Market 2022

The Adelaide Central Market is always a popular attraction for visitors to the city to see. Even as a local, it’s a buzz to go and visit with the life and colour, sights, sounds and aromas all vying for your attention.

It has a family friendly environment and is a place that’s very educational for adults and kids alike.

I mean, who knew there were that many tomato varieties to choose from. There are always fruit and vegetables that have you guessing what they are, but the quality and freshness of the produce leaves you in no doubt, that whatever you buy, you’ll be getting the very best.

Apart from the spectacle of all the colourful fruit, vegetables and flowers, there are more than 70 traders where you can buy everything from seafood, meat, cheeses, bakery items, health foods and more all undercover.

The other colourful things to see in the market are the murals which include this newest one called ‘Market Daydream’, a collaboration by artists Tiff Rysdale, Jade Harland and Ryan Turner, which was completed in October 2021. The mural depicts the many facets of market life.

Other murals can be found in different areas of the market so keep your eyes open as you wander. Then take a break, rest your feet and enjoy some of the fine food and coffee while you people watch.

School holidays are a terrific time to take little ones to the market with a market trail for them to follow. For a cost of $12, kids get a market bag and a map which will lead them to certain market stalls where they receive samples of food to try. Details on the market trail, can be found on the Adelaide Central Market website.

During the Tasting Australia festival, (from April 30th) the market will also have a program of free events and cooking demonstrations by some of Adelaide’s best known chefs and market traders.

The market is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays and a few tips before you visit are to make sure you dress warmly (it can be a bit breezy in the building), wear comfortable shoes for lots of walking, bring your market bags and containers if you want to fill up from bulk food suppliers.

An added bonus is that Chinatown is located next to the market and there are plenty of tasty options to find for lunch with Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Korean food and restaurant quality dishes to tempt you.

The Adelaide Central Market is on Gouger Street in the heart of the city, and if you’re driving, there is convenient parking directly above the market, or tram and bus stops are nearby.

  1. Years ago, when I was teaching in Adelaide, I would take my class to the Central Market for an excursion. Each group of children, accompanied by a parent, had a shopping list and when we got back to school we would cook up the produce to make vegetable soup and fruit salad. It was an excellent activity for teaching about shopping and the use of money. It was always such a colourful, bustling place.
