An alternative to staying in caravan parks or free camping in Australia, is a station stay. They can be a good way to try off grid camping while still having the comforts of amenities and others around in a secure environment. At some of these stays you can also opt for powered caravan sites so they can really suit everybody.
In South Australia alone there are more than two dozen working cattle or sheep stations that offer accommodation and camping areas. There are many more around Australia and some are thousands of hectares in area.

When you stay, you can experience the beautiful rugged landscapes, bushwalks, wide open spaces, star filled nights and campfires. Some also offer tours of the properties or give you maps to take a self-guided tour, discovering 4wd tracks on your own.

We’ve stayed at a few in South Australia and I’ve written an article for the Unsealed 4×4 website, where you can read about four of my favourites in ‘4 Awesome Station Stays in South Australia’.
Take a look and see why you might want to consider one of these station stays, next time you’re planning a trip in SA.
Happy trails

We’ve never stayed at a station. It sounds like fun.

These ones are a great introduction and I’m looking forward to trying more around the country.
