For two years in a row we’ve road tripped to Eyre Peninsula in South Australia with part of the journey including taking part in the Australian Salmon Fishing Championship.
The competition takes place in the boundary area of the District Council of Elliston and entry is open to anyone. Before the competition you simply have to purchase a ticket from one of the local businesses and check the rules then you’re good to go.
The one off entry fee is only $10 and there are weekly prizes to win as well as the overall winner prize. If you’re in the area you’d be mad not to give it a go, because as well as prizes for the heaviest fish and runner up, there are mystery weight prizes each week and even a monthly best photo prize.

As well as the top fishing, the Eyre Peninsula coast has some absolutely spectacular camping and caravanning areas, especially if you love to go off grid. All the details of the championship and where to base yourself in a caravan, are in my story which can be found in the autumn edition of ‘On The Road’ magazine.

If you grab a copy of the magazine now, you can plan your visit to Elliston in time for the 2023 Australian Salmon Fishing Championship which runs from 1st June to 31st of August, and this year will be the 30th year of the competition.
It’s a beautiful part of South Australia to visit and you never know your luck. Even if you’re not successful, spending time fishing on any of the beaches is worth the time and effort.

Some of them take a little more effort to get to than others but I have to admit, we’ve had the best results from easily accessible beaches just a short walk over dunes from our campsite.
Why not give it a go!

We’re not fishing people but it would be fun to watch everyone else.
