It’s been a long time between blogs but with good reason, as we have been off on an adventure to reach the tip of Cape York, Australia’s most northerly mainland point. It was an epic journey, the hardest we’ve ever done. We did it over 12 days and still by no means saw everything, but you always have to leave something to re visit.
The roughly 1800 kilometre round trip had a bit of everything from bitumen roads to good dirt roads to completely shocking barely able to be called roads. There were the odd small water crossings, open bushland, rainforests and beaches.

We saw wallabies, roaming cattle, wild horses, camp dogs and yes even one massive croc swimming by one of our campsites at night. Oh yeah, and we did the whole trip in a 3 person speedy tent, with shade and shelter from the car awning and a tarp. We were very happy with our decision to park and store our van at Lakeland before starting on the PDR (Peninsula Development Road) and doing the journey in a tent made it all the more special and adventurous. Wherever we stayed, we tried to camp amongst the shelter of trees for shade and wind and rain protection if needed and occasionally we scored a campsite under a shelter structure.

The main goals for us were getting to the tip and taking a ferry over to Thursday Island, both were absolute highlights and we loved pretty much everything in between. We made some new friends along the way and have loved the camaraderie that ensues from tackling these epic drives with others experiencing the same things. People doing the same journey all look out for each other and happily give advice and tips along the way, and evenings shared with a drink or two and the swapping of stories usually occurred.

Over a few blogs I will go more into more depth on our experiences, but in the meantime you can see some of the story of our journey in photos on my Instagram or Facebook pages, ~ Caravan Correspondent.

Cheers for now
Glenys

Thank you it still feels like a very wild frontier in a lot of places, and a big accomplishment. It’s lovely to see parts of the country still like this.

I am glad to hear you had an amazing trip to Australia’s northernmost point. As I’ve never heard of Cape York, I had to use Google to see where it is located on the map. It certainly looks like a trip to Australia’s last frontier each day brings something special. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thank you Aiva, it’s quite a wild place still, not yet an easy place to get too, and I think that’s what makes it so special still.
