Ubertas Wines – A new Barossa Valley favourite

We are greeted at the door by the friendly smile of Kevin as we are welcomed into the tasting room of Ubertas Wines, on a cool and misty Barossa winters day.

Kevin Liu, together with his brother Philip are behind this family friendly, 100% organic, and very hospitable cellar door in the town of Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley.

We learn the story of the brothers growing up in Taiwan and working in their grandfather’s rice fields before immigrating to Australia in 2007. Their respect for the land and organic farming has led them to establishing their own small batch vineyard which they purchased in 2014, and they now produce full bodied varieties of wine while putting their own unique stamp on the Barossa.

With Kevin Liu having a Masters in Marketing and Philip a Masters in Oenology, they make a formidable pair and it’s very easy to settle in for a long session in their bright, modern cellar door, which has huge picture windows overlooking the lawns, vineyard and maze.

The airy indoor space is warmed by the substantial stone fireplace, ringed with comfy leather lounge chairs, but we head to a table, keen to begin our wine tasting experience and partake in the food which we’ve heard from friends is absolutely delicious too. We are made to feel more like friends of the family than customers and that sets the tone for the afternoon.

Our wine tasting consists of six wines, a chardonnay, rose, merlot, Shiraz, Shiraz cab sauvignon and a dry grown full body Shiraz variety, all of which hit the right notes for us. Kevin takes us through the tasting, giving us great detail of the process and flavour notes, we’re just loving them all and settle on our individual favourites to have by the glass while we enjoy a tasting plate each.

On Fridays to Sundays, signature Taiwanese and Malaysian style street food is on offer, prepared by Chefins. This is the passion project of Louann Liu and her friend Bianca Yego and their flavourful, generous dishes are so tasty that you will want to return again and again for more.

The tasting plate experience began with the most delicious Taipei beef noodle soup and was followed with small portions of drunken pork and Chinese braised pork belly, followed by Rendang curry and rice. All of the dishes were absolutely flawless, made with love and totally delicious. To top off this epicurean delight, we had the Mochi donut, a light and airy sweet cloud.

The winery name to remember is Ubertas, from the Latin word meaning: fruitfulness, fertility, abundance, plenty – and it’s very apt in both the wines and food experience you have when you visit.
The cellar door is open seven days a week and the whole family can enjoy the time here with the kids able to explore the outdoor area and maze created with dwarf bottle brush bushes, which will grow in time to be more challenging.

It’s not hard to imagine spending a warm and sunny day at this Barossa winery, watching the kids explore the maze, as you supervise them from the upstairs balcony of the cellar door with a glass of your favourite wine and sumptuous food at hand.
Ubertas Wines is on Research Road, Nuriootpa, just a short distance from where we stayed, at the Big4 Barossa Tourist Park.

This caravan park is one of our favourites, especially in winter with each site having a fire pit to use and wood available from reception. The facilities and amenities are spotless, and the staff extremely friendly and helpful.

We love this park which is situated between the town oval and Coulthard Reserve and its proximity to other Barossa Valley towns, makes it a good base.

Make Ubertas Wines a must visit, next time you’re touring the Barossa Valley and you won’t be disappointed.
