Next time you’re caravanning through north west Victoria, factor in a stay at Murray Sunset National Park and in particular the Lake Crosbie campground, which is easily accessible for all types of caravans.
The turn off to the National Park is from the Sturt Highway near the locality of LInga, between Ouyen and the SA border and the 13 kilometre Pink Lakes Road is a well graded gravel road.
The attraction for staying in the park are the pink lakes which were once used for commercial salt harvesting. Weather conditions have to be just right to see them at their pinkest best, but usually a blue sunny sky and a little water in the lakes will show them at their best.
Even though we didn’t have the ideal conditions, we still managed to get an idea of how the lakes pink colour shows with a slight tinge of colour visible.

On the way to Lake Crosbie, stop at Lake Hardy where you’ll also be able to grab information sheets and maps of the National Park which covers 633,000 hectares. There is loads of wildlife, though we only saw the evidence of kangaroos with footprints in the salt flats, but apparently there are more than 183 species of plants and animals.

You can pick up an information sheet that lists the more than 300 species of birds that you can find in this Mallee park too, including some rare and endangered species.
The main campground at Lake Crosbie is really well laid out with camping areas to drive into and set up, some suitable for groups and others for single setups. There are clean and maintained long drop toilets, fireplaces and picnic tables to use and it is completely free to stay. No permits or fees are needed to stay.

While you’re in the park there are driving and walking tracks to take, but most of the driving tracks are only suitable for 4WD vehicles.
This is a really quiet and peaceful stopover if you’re travelling between South Australia and Victoria.
Enjoy the serenity

What a fantastic place to explore as you can journey through a huge landscape of vast skies and open plains with kangaroos bounding beside you. Not to mention experiencing fascinating pink salt lakes. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Friends of ours camped here for a few days earlier in the year. Their photos were gorgeous too.

We’d happily return again for a few days, we didn’t have much time to discover other parts of the park on this visit.
