Lameroo Silo Art

Lameroo in South Australia has been the lucky latest town to have a painted silo added to the growing trail to discover as you travel around Australia.

The silos which are easily found as you drive through the main street of town, were painted by the artist Sam ‘Smug’ Bates, a master of hyper realism paintings, and this one is no different with incredibly realistic facial features on the main subject of the painting.

Lameroo is around 200 kilometres south east of Adelaide on the Mallee Highway, and not too far from the Victoria border. It’s a very clean, tidy and friendly town with a hotel, great playground for kids, a very good bakery and café, and a caravan park within walking distance to the main street.

The town is surrounded by farming land and the silo artwork depicts the pioneering farmers and local history. A windmill is a prominent part of the painting which references the challenges that farmers faced without any above ground surface water source. The low rainfall and dense coverage of Mallee trees meant hard work for the initial establishment of farms and with windmills popping up everywhere to access underground water, the town became known as ‘the land of the windmill’.

The silo art also features sheep and wheat and the sunlight shining through in the painting is very striking. You can almost feel the warmth of it as you stand in front of the imposing structure.

This eastern silo in Lameroo is still a fully operational grain silo and it’s just the first part of the silo artwork project. Another artwork is planned on a western silo which will pay tribute to the role of women in agriculture.

The artist ‘Smug’ is from Glasgow UK, and he has a huge array of artwork around Australia. This is his 6th silo mural in Australia. This one is easy to spot as you enter town and there is plenty of parking space to pull up and admire it.

We can also vouch for the fabulous bakery, so make sure you spend a bit of money in town while you’re there.

Enjoy
