The Flinders Ranges town of Quorn has a whole host of attractions that have put it on the map. High on the list is the Pichi Richi Railway, a heritage steam train where you can take a full day, or half day trip to experience a relaxed and scenic tour, the way it was in 1878 when the line was originally constructed.
Quorn has also been featured in many classic Australian movies over the years, which were filmed in and around the town. Films including, Walkabout, Sunday too Far Away, Gallipoli, The Shiralee and Robbery under Arms, are just some of the titles that have used the stunning landscapes, and historic buildings for authenticity.

Both of these facts about Quorn, feature on the illuminated silo art show, which you can see not far from the railway station running every evening from sunset. The free nightly spectacular, projects animated stories and art depicting the town’s history which you can see by taking a deck chair and settling in to watch the show which runs for around half an hour, followed by art and photography by local community members.

The nights can be extremely chilly though, so an alternative is to park the car on Railway Terrace in parking spaces provided and tune your radio into 87.6 FM to listen to the stories, all in the comfort of your warm car.
Another must see in Quorn is the War Memorial garden on Railway Terrace which as well as commemorating servicemen and women, it also features some amazing life sized sculptures, representing soldiers and nurses who served.

The incredibly life like sculptures are unique in that they’re made of wire mesh and their features and faces are astounding, considering the material they’re made from. The sculptures were designed and made by Queensland artist Ivan Lovett and are also illuminated at night.

There is more beautiful art to find around town, with buildings near the war memorial adorned with native flora, which were painted by another Queensland artist @daringtodream-create.

The same artist also painted these iconic old Australian produce brand labels, which would be familiar to many.

A few more brilliant murals can be found around town, painted by Joel Plevin @plev.art, an artist from the nearby town of Wilmington.

For artisans of a different type, head to Flinders Gin in Quorn, situated in what was once the 1890s built stables and farriers. The old stone building is toasty warm inside and you can partake in a gin flight, tasting their range of gins infused with native ingredients of the Flinders Ranges, or go straight for a G&T if you know your favourite.

Their unique range includes Quondong gin which is made with the native peach, Outback lemon lime gin made with native lemongrass (yes it is a thing apparently), and Butterfly gin, which is made from the Butterfly Pea flower, giving it an apple-blueberry flavour. Flinders Gin distillery is open every day from 11am to 5pm.

Cheers

Wow, so much beautiful art work to admire. It’s not often you see women depicted at war memorials, so these are very special. And the idea of watching the lightshow on the silos from inside your car would be very tempting on a cold night.
