The whales are still here in spring! Winter in South Australia is the peak time to see whales along our coastline as they come to breed in warmer waters north of Antarctica. There are a number of well-known whale spotting areas one of which is Head of the Bight and along the Nullarbor coastline. Being over 1000 kilometres from Adelaide this obviously takes a bit of planning to visit at the peak time to see whales, however, you donât have to venture far from the city to see these awesome creatures and theyâre not always far off shore either. They are easily visible from the beach and a standard set of binoculars or camera zoom will give you an even closer look.

Storm Boy Discovery Trail in South Australia
If you love Australian movies and visiting the places where they were made then the Storm Boy discovery trail is for you.
The original Storm Boy movie was made in 1976 and the remake is due for release in January of 2019. The story is set in the 1950s and luckily history has been preserved (or in some cases a little re-created) in the towns that were used as settings for the movie. The natural environment of the Coorong and the beaches and wildlife will no doubt speak for themselves.
Port Elliot to Middleton Coastal Walk
The Port Elliot and Middleton coast is very familiar and popular with a lot of South Aussies, itâs so close to Adelaide (around 80 kilometres away) that it can be a day trip destination. Once in Port Elliot a good way to stretch the legs and see the really picturesque coastline of this Fleurieu region is to take a walk from Horseshoe Bay to Middleton.
Have a Whale of a time along the Fleurieu Coast.
At home in South Australia, one of my favourite winter pastimes is to go whale spotting on a weekend. Luckily you only have to venture to the Fleurieu coast in South Australia to find one of their holiday playgrounds where they spend a few months in warmer waters with their calves. There are certainly other spots in South Australia where you can see them but for proximity to Adelaide and likelihood of spotting whales itâs a good area to start. There is also the added bonus of being able to see them fairly close up from the land and at a popular surfing beach.
