Mindl Beach Sunset Market – Darwin

No trip to Darwin in the dry season would be complete without an evening at the Mindl Beach Market.

These markets have now been running for more than 30 years and are held every Thursday and Sunday from the end of April through to the end of October every year. Thursday is usually the bigger night with Sunday being a smaller market and usually patronised more by the locals.

The markets originally started with the idea of bringing a Southeast Asian style night market to Australia and it still has that feel about it with many food vendors selling traditional Asian dishes but you will also find just about every other cuisine to your liking amongst the more than 60 food and drink stalls.

A good way to see the market is to get there early when they open at 4pm, then take a walk around to familiarise yourself with all the stalls, there are more than 200 including the food stalls. Once you’ve chosen what to eat you can grab a seat away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some live entertainment while you eat. With all the choices of food you may want to sample a few different options.

Keep an eye out for hundreds of hermit crabs scuttling across the sand all around you too.

Probably about now you can manage a dessert from one of the stalls and tell yourself that all the walking around will work it off.

The markets are open until 9pm and with so much tempting food, you might want to plan on visiting more than once.

Enjoy
