Nestled unobtrusively amongst a stand of gum trees in Langhorne Creek with views of the family vineyard is the surprisingly spacious, shipping container cellar door of Kimbolton Wines.

The wines have been produced by the Kimbolton label since 1998 and today the 5^th generation of wine makers are adding a modern stamp to the brand, not the least with this quirky cellar door which was opened in 2018.

From the exterior you can’t imagine the architecturally designed space that will open up to you as you enter the light and bright ply lined interior. With a row of vertical lift up windows catching your eye directly in front of the entrance, and a wall of glass folding doors bringing the vineyard views indoors, you are drawn into the building, past a wall of wines and into the tasting room.

Outdoors there are even more surprises with a deck to sit comfortably at umbrella shaded wine barrels, or you can venture upstairs to a rooftop deck and take in the views from a whole new perspective.

The cellar door has a bright and fresh ambiance to it which is enhanced with their innovative tasting experiences. There are two different wine flights you can take with a red wine flight of six different varieties or mixed wines which includes 2 whites, a rose and 2 reds, and have them paired with local cheeses or a selection of grazing platters.

One of the very clever aspects about the experience was having visual tasting notes for each wine, suggested meal pairings and other useful information which was convenient to refer back to as you sampled them.

The experience we opted for included a guided wine tasting, followed by our choice of a bottle of wine, matched with a locally produced cheese and other tasty local products which were presented in a grazing box, with a cheese board and wine glasses that we could take home afterwards, along with any of the products we didn’t finish.

This tasting experience for two cost $130 which was excellent value and more than enough for the two of us, with lots of products brought home to enjoy another time.

This is one winery that can truly claim to be family friendly, welcoming the family pooch and even offering cordial flights for the kids where they have three local cordials matched with cheese, kabana and chocolate, so they can partake in the experience along with mum and dad.

The winery also holds special events called ‘Beats & Eats’ on one Saturday or Sunday each month, where along with live music, patrons can enjoy a glass of wine, and a couple of courses of international cuisine provided by food trucks, all for a set price of $50 per head. These events sound like fun with names like ‘Paella Palooza’, ‘Satay Partay’ and ‘Greek in the Creek’ tempting you to visit and partake.

With spring and summer approaching there are also lawn games to use so an entertaining day out seems assured. Kimbolton Wines is open every day from 11am to 4pm and the Langhorne Creek wine region is a mere one hour’s drive south east of Adelaide.

I can see us participating in an upcoming  ‘Beats & Eats’ day, especially as there is a free camp situated pretty much directly across the road.
