A busy weekend is coming up again on the Fleurieu Peninsula with the 2023 Southern Surf Festival at Middleton and the Wooden Boat Festival at Goolwa / Hindmarsh Island, occurring on the same weekend.
The weekend of Saturday April 29th and Sunday 30th is the weekend to find accommodation or even take a day trip (it’s not too far from Adelaide and surrounds) for a host of activities and attractions to suit all ages. Take a look at what you can expect at each of the festivals.
Southern Surf Festival – Middleton Beach
This two day celebration of South Australian surfing and surf competition is held at Middleton Point and more than 200 competitors are expected to attempt to be named state champion in a number of different events. There will be different competitions for shortboard, longboard, kneeboard surfing and more and you get great views from Middleton Point to see all the action in the water.

You can also expect a market, music, food trucks, and local wine and beer to try as well. Over both days you can also check out board swaps, surf art and family friendly activities. Sunday will have inter-club teams from around the state competing against each other and for those wanting to have a try, surf schools will be operating.

South Australian Wooden Boat Festival – Goolwa / Hindmarsh Island
This will be a weekend of celebrations acknowledging maritime history and wooden boat builders of the past and present with the festival hub at Coorong Quays on Hindmarsh Island due to the Goolwa Wharf undergoing an upgrade. There is a busy program of events on land and water over the two days of the event.

At the hub there’ll be boat displays, food stalls, local beer and wine, wood turners, community groups and Ngarrindjeri art by Cedric Varcoe.
Throughout the days there will be music, boat building competitions and a vintage Tiger Moth bi-plane fly over.
On the river in Goolwa there’ll be sailing races with vintage yachts and other classes of yachts from the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club and on Sunday, there will be two screenings of the movie ‘Storm Boy’ at Centenary Hall in Cadell Street (the main street in Goolwa), with one viewing at 11am and the second at 2pm.

After the events don’t forget to visit the Wharf Barrel Shed, 90 Mile Wines at Signal Point overlooking the Hindmarsh Island bridge in Goolwa.
The full program can be found here.
Enjoy

There is a lot going on for sure, but no we thought about tickets way too late and everything was sold out. We are already thinking about next year though if it returns again.

We wonder if it’s going to be in a different state each year. It certainly seems to be a great success for SA. I just watched the Lions win at Mt Barker on TV- a very pleasing result.

We watched too, in fact we’ve watched most of them to see how it does look to interstaters. 😊 We used to live near Mt Barker it’s a growing area almost a satellite city now. I think other states are definitely hoping this idea will be shared around because Adelaide is making good money from it and all the spin offs with accommodation and dining.
Our Premier is out to prove a point about getting big events to Adelaide so he’s pushing hard to have gather round in SA for the next few years! There’s already talk that an oval in the Barossa and the McLaren Vale wine region are being earmarked for next year.

Good for him. We need to have governments on our side.

Like everywhere in the country now, he just has to put the money made into roads, hospitals, police and education. 😁
