Fishing SA – October/November 2024

I’m thrilled to have two stories AND a recipe in the current edition of Fishing SA, South Australia’s favourite sportfishing magazine and the only hard copy, print magazine of its type in SA.

The first article “Moonta Bay’s Fish of the Season’ is about fishing at this stunning spot on Yorke Peninsula and in particular targeting garfish. These little darts provide quite the fight when you are lucky enough to get onto a school of them and when you do hit the right spot at the right time, there’s full on fun for fishers.

The story looks at the how, and when to target them in the sheltered bay, just one of the areas where you can find this species. The best part is that while you’re waiting for a school to strike, you can also target squid and whiting on the same grounds.

The second story in the magazine is called ‘No Boat, No Worries’ and as the name suggests, it shows that you don’t need to have a boat to be in on the top fishing to be had, at many of Yorke Peninsula’s beaches.

Wading in the shallows of many of Yorkes beaches it a fun way to go fishing and crabbing, and with a bit of pre planning, you can fashion up a handy fishing tub, to make this type of fishing even easier. A fishing tub that can be wheeled along the sand flats and then left anchored to float as the tide comes in, is a really useful bit of equipment. It leaves your hands free and unencumbered to rake for blue swimmer crabs, or catch a few whiting and other shallow feeding fish. Having large floats for wheels and anchored with a rope tied to a pvc tube, the tub just raises with the incoming tide and can hold your catch as you go.

The article gives some more useful tips on bait to use, what else to carry in your kit and species to target in the pools that form in the sand flats. It’s a great way to get the whole family fishing (even Neo kelpie makes an appearance in the magazine!), and wading through the warm, crystal clear waters of Yorke Peninsula is a relaxing and peaceful way to spend some quality family holiday time.

The recipe in the October / November edition is for a Thai style fish curry – yum! I used Flathead for this yellow curry, but any fleshy fish can be substituted.

Both of these stories and the recipe are just some of the inspiring reads from all around the state, in the latest edition of Fishing SA magazine. Grab a copy at all good newsagents and tackle stores or sign up to receive the digital edition online.

It will certainly get you ready and looking forward to summer in South Australia, which hopefully will be here before we know it.

Enjoy

Glenys

  2. Congrats, Glenys. I loved my road trip around the Yorke Peninsula a couple of years ago. They were doing a lot of town renovations in Moonta at the time so it was difficult to get a good look. l will definitely go back. I remember a stunning town hall.

    1. Thanks Coral, Yorke Peninsula has so many great little country towns and unique shops, as well as those amazing beaches. We visit often and still find a lot changes from year to year. Always a favourite destination of ours. The town hall is beautiful as are some of the old churches.
