On the Trail of Mural Art – Minlaton

Well this was a fun little activity we stumbled across on our last visit to Yorke Peninsula. The town of Minlaton is in central Yorkes and is known for its barley production, and for being the home of World War 1 flying ace, Harry Butler. Now they can add this to their reasons to pay a visit next time you’re in the area.

This Community Art Trail encourages visitors to find all of the thirteen mini murals around town, by getting travellers to stop and have a wander around town in search of them all.

The artist behind the murals is a local woman by the name of Bella Campion and the art trail was the concept of the Minlaton and District Progress Association, who wanted to present free public art in a fun and engaging way.

I have to admit the first couple of murals I found by accident and then realised I was onto something unique. That led me to finding a brochure on the art trail from the local information and tourism centre at Harvest Corner, which is another place worth visiting.

The trail had the desired effect on us making us traipse up and down the main street, hunting high and low, while popping into shops and other businesses along the way, spending as we went.

Not all of the murals are on the main street and while I found a fair few of them, there were many I missed too. That has left me wanting to go back to find them all! Next time.

Make sure to stop in at Harvest Corner to chat with the friendly locals, pick up any brochures you may need and while there take a look at the gallery room with paintings and photos by local artists, hand crafted products, and delicious homemade preserves and biscuits.

Enjoy
