Itโs the time of year again when social media feeds, especially Instagram, is filled with striking photos of golden canola fields everywhere.
Whole sweeping vistas of this bright and cheerful crop certainly make for beautiful photographs and the fields are absolutely brilliant to see in real life.
Youโll find them at their peak now at the end of winter and into early spring, and in South Australia there are many places to see them, meaning you donโt have to drive far from where you live, or as you’re travelling, to experience them.
One big note to remember (and it shouldnโt have to be said) is not to enter the fields, but stay outside of fences and just enjoy the spectacle. There are plenty of spots to see them easily from the road.
Here are just a few of the places in SA where you can find these spectacular fields of gold.
Southern Flinders Ranges
Just north of Melrose and towards Wirrabara we found some canola fields that were easy to pull up and photograph.

If youโre staying in the area Iโd recommend the Melrose Caravan Park or the Community Caravan Park at Wirrabara.
Clare & the Mid North
As you travel the highways and back roads in the mid north of the state youโll find more swathes of gold in and around the Clare and Burra regions.

My tips for staying in these areas would be the Discovery Park in Clare, the Burra Caravan Park or for off grid caravanning near Burra, stay at Worlds End Reserve, a totally free off grid camping area.
Eyre Peninsula
Thereโs a lot of grain farming land on Eyre Peninsula and these canola crops were near the town of Cleve, a really interesting town to discover.

Thereโs a great off grid area to stay at Yeldulknie Weir with toilets and BBQโs which is managed by the local Lions service club, where you can stay for a donation.
Fleurieu Peninsula
Plenty of examples of the gloriously bright fields can be found on the Fleurieu Peninsula, possibly the easiest of regions to get to from Adelaide, and youโll find some of the best places at Goolwa, Middleton and on the road there from Strathalbyn.

If you’re staying in the area I would recommend a stay at the Port Elliot Holiday Park.
If youโre road tripping at this time of year it pays to pack in the camera and keep your eyes open, especially since a wetter than average winter has meant bumper crops of canola this year. You will pretty much see them in just about every direction you head into rural South Australia.
They are pretty spectacular to see at any time but if you manage to score a nice sunny day with blue skies, youโre in for a dazzling view.
Enjoy

Such a beautiful colour, and really enhanced by overcast skies too.
