Fitzroy Laneways Art

You can’t fail to see street art when you visit Melbourne, it is everywhere! City laneways are renowned for the art and on our last visit I managed to find a few new to me.

Spending time around Fitzroy is another jackpot area if you’re looking for art and murals.

You only have to wander a few blocks to find examples and you have to remember to look back, look up and venture down a few laneways to be rewarded.

In Melbourne city head to the corner of Little Bourke and Spencer streets to see these murals created by from left to right, SMUG, Rone and Adnate.

Take a stroll around Fitzroy between Brunswick Street and Smith Street and you’ll find heaps of colour, some terrific large murals and other areas that are just a mess of graffiti tags.

For many of the pieces I couldn’t tell you who the artists are but a couple of standouts are below. The orange praying mantis is by Phibs a prolific artist with a strong graffiti background and lots of other artworks to find around Fitzroy. He has painted so many walls in this suburb that it is affectionately known as ‘Phibsroy’ to the locals.

Another praying mantis can be found in Fitzroy, this one by Buzzard and in a laneway in the same street (don’t ask me which one) is the cheeky martian.

There are lots of great murals in the area featuring women too, including this unmissable one which was painted in 2014 by Adnate and Twoone which can be found in an alleyway off Johnston Street. Nearby is another fabulous mural by Cam Scale.

Brunswick Street in Fitzroy is definitely a destination to visit for murals and graffiti art, and while you’re there, check out the roads and laneways that lead off this main street and you won’t be disappointed.

Enjoy the discoveries.
